¡Bailemos Juntos!

The presenters will teach dances that are danced in Concordia Language Villages’ El Lago del Bosque. The dances include line dances, traditional dances, and popular dances. We will explore dance as a vehicle to teach not only culture, but also as a natural connection to grammar and vocabulary.
Dance is a fun way to incorporate multiple intelligences in our classrooms.
So, put on your dancing shoes and let’s dance together!

On Thursday Oct 6 and Friday Oct 28 Paulino Brener presenting Bailemos Juntos for CIS (College in Schools) program.

The Bailemos Juntos presentation if part of a longer session where High School students from different town and cities in MN come to visit the University of Minnesota. These students are part of a unique program sponsored by the U of M in which the take an advance Spanish class in their High School and earn credits from U of M at the same time.

The presentation for CIS is usually about 3 hours long in the theater at Coffman Union or auditorium at Mayo Building.  Bailemos Juntos is usually left to end the presentation. Students listen and learn a lot from the former part of the presentation (usually cultural topics) but they are always ready to get up and move with Bailemos Juntos.  Space sometimes can be limited by we make it work.  We have so much fun!

CIS is usually attended by 300 or 400 High School students.

Today a group of about 150 students of Spanish 3, 4 and 5 from Tech High School (St. Cloud, MN) experienced Bailemos Juntos.

Bailemos Juntos is a high energy dance workshop conducted all in Spanish. Paulino Brener, a native from Argentina and a Spanish teacher himself, knows how to work with both small and big groups of students and not just entertain them but make them all participate.  Bailemos Juntos not only includes several line dances with Spanish music but also  some basic Latin steps (such us Salsa and Merengue) so that students get some exposure to them.

Students from Tech High School were divided in two groups. While one group was participating in Bailemos Juntos workshop at the lovely hall in Plaza Verde in South Minneapolis, the other group had some real exposure to Latino culture  and food at the nearby Mercado Central.  The Spanish teachers prepared some activities for them to do there but also gave them some freedom to wonder around and experience the place by themselves. After about an hour the groups switched places.

All students were very motivated and energized by the workshop. Waka Waka was their favorite dance and they asked for encore. Teachers enjoyed the field trip as well. In the past they used to bring their students to Minneapolis to see a show or something like that but they really appreciated the participatory experience that Bailemos Juntos offers.

“We attended Paulino’s workshop at the Central States Conference for Foreign Language Teachers in Minnesota in 2010.  We returned to our high school and submitted a grant proposal for the funding to have him come and teach our students the songs and dances from “Bailemos Juntos”.  He came the Monday after Prom weekend and our students loved him.  He had everyone dancing and singing along with him.  He was a great motivational and educational inspiration for all of us.  His energetic and knowledgeable presentation made a lasting impact on our students who still dance and sing “Bailemos Juntos”.

We had a blast at IWLA.  We taught “Waka Waka” by Shakira for the first time. “Waka Waka” is  the FIFA World Cup 2010 Official Anthem.
